Funding + Support for Your Art Business

We like to dream BIG over here at Limitless Artists and making those big dreams reality all starts with building a strong foundation.

Here is one of my favorite quotes on the matter Henry David Thoreau:

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.

Here are 3 tips you can use to create a strong foundation for your limitless artistic dreams…

1.) Support Networks: Never underestimate the power of community! You’re already a part of a great support community here at Limitless Artists, and I would love for you to find even more artistic communities to become a part of, particularly those specific to your craft. Research clubs, networking groups and other organizations that support artists in your field. These can be both local as well as online (facebook groups are great!). Depending on your specific needs, there may also be opportunities for non-profit support as well. As an independent filmmaker (who happens to be a woman) – lately, I’ve been teaming up with organizations that support women in film and provide peer-peer mentorship. My mom recently joined up with a group of photographers in her area that help each other with technique and exhibition of their work. If you’re having trouble finding a group that caters to your specific needs and desires…have you ever thought about starting one? 

2.) Financial Backing: Building a financially successful career as an artist more often than not takes longer than we would like. It’s important during the transitionary period when you’re building your art business, to feel financially stable and supported. You may have the good fortune of financial support from abundant savings, family, your own business or other means – but if you do find the need to take a side job, I encourage you to find something that feels good. That may sound like a paradox, however, it is totally possible. If you like kids, perhaps you could nanny or tutor or teach your artistic craft to young people. If you’re experienced in a specific trade or skill outside of your artistry, focus on connecting with people to work with whom you feel good around. On the journey to doing what you love full-time, you want to be able to enjoy the ride and I am confident you can find side work that fills you up in a positive way vs. draining you. I also encourage you to research any grants/other forms of financial support for artists in your field. If you are fundraising for a specific project, perhaps you can team up with a non-profit that provides fiscal sponsorship for your fundraising efforts (which allows donors to deduct the donation on their taxes).

2.) Building a Team: When we’re starting out, we usually end up doing everything on our own. This might make sense at first – but as you grow your business and pull in more income, start to think about what kind of team members you might want to have in place. Are there people who represent artists in your field in business (agents, managers, record labels, art dealers, etc.). How might you be able to connect with them? You can also start to think about what support you might want for your business (do you want to hire a web developer, an accountant, an assistant)? Maybe you feel overwhelmed with the admin side of things and want to hire an assistant once a week at $10-15/hr for half a day’s work or even a virtual assistant to delegate a few tasks to. Remember that you don’t have to do everything yourself and you can start small with asking for help. 

Now, it’s time to TAKE ACTION – will you use any of the strategies above? Here’s a quick list you can tack onto your “to-do”s so it all feels a little more manageable:

  • Research 1-3 support groups for artists in my field
  • Decide + take action on 1-3 ideas for garnering more financial support for my art business
  • Brainstorm potential team members I’d like to connect with to help me build my art business
